National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame STEVE McQUEEN'S INDIAN CHOPPER ON DISPLAY The National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in Anamosa, Iowa recently acquired a 1947 Indian Chopper owned by the late Steve McQueen, TV and film star. According to sources, this motorcycle was one of Steve’s favorite bikes, used to “get away from it all” in the desert he loved. Included with the bike is his sleeping bag and leather saddlebag. Steve McQueen was the highest paid and most popular movie star of the 60’s and 70’s. From 1958-1961, he played Josh Randall, bounty hunter, in the TV series “Wanted: Dead or Alive”. Screen credits include “The Great Escape”, “The Blob”, “The Magnificent Seven”, “The Hunter”, “The Cincinnati Kid”, “Papillon”, “Tom Horn”, The Thomas Crown Affair”, “Bullitt”, “LeMans”, “Nevada Smith” and “Sand Pebbles” for which he received a Best Actor Oscar nomination. His passion for racing and speed were legendary and McQueen had the talent to match the passion. Not only did he do almost all of his own stunts and stunt driving for his movies, he seriously considered full-time professional racing rather than continue his acting career. McQueen won numerous car and cycle races and in 1962, he was a team member of the British Motor Corporation competing at Sebring, Florida. Steve was a member of the 1964 American team for the International Six Day Trials, held in East Germany – the most prestigious bike event for professional cycle riders. (He participated with his long-time friend and race partner, Bud Ekin along with Dave Ekin, Cliff Coleman and John Steen). However his greatest joy seemed to be in grueling off-road races – either bike or car. He even organized a firm – Solar Engineering – to produce off-road vehicles and equipment, including the “Baja Bucket”, a dune buggy safety seat of his own design. McQueen owned about 210 Motorcycles, 55 cars and 5 airplanes during his life. Tragically, he died of cancer in 1980 at age 50. The McQueen bike, along with 90 other fascinating motorcycles, can be viewed at The National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. The Museum is open daily, year round at 200 E. Main St., Anamosa, Iowa. For more information contact the museum at 319-462-3925 or email national_mc_museum@hotmail.com. National Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame 200 E. Main Street, P.O.
